My Grammy was the kind of southern woman who was a force of nature - equal parts wild, unpredictable, and mundane. The eighth anniversary of her passing was a couple days ago, and happened to coincide with the unsolicited delivery of a massive crookneck squash on our front porch.

After 4 sons and 2 grandsons, I was “her” girl. As a baby she proclaimed I “looked just like one of [hers]”, which had the distinct pleasure of also getting a rise out of my mother (her daughter-in-law).

It just felt destined to become braised summer squash with onions from @tonitiptonmartin “Jubilee”. The first time I saw it I was immediately sent back to the ritz-cracker topped squash casserole of Grammy’s supper table, which she always called “squatch” (to my “California” chagrin).

What I would give to have another helping of that buttery, soft, and insanely delicious casserole. This will have to do.

I like to to think she’d be secretly happy my babies are boys (she did raise four of her own, after all). She would definitely be happy I didn’t let a squatch go to waste.

Feels like all my Griffin-mama time lately is spent at the doctor...hopefully his ear tubes follow up today is the last for a while. Maybe he and I will go on one of our trademark “treat walks” this weekend.

I’ve been holding out on you... one because I ate this salmon nicoise like 2 weeks ago, and 2 because I’ve been MIA for like a month. Just know that we made blackberry ice cream, ate so many salads, and I miss you. But the big girl job calls (and actually pays me $) so I had to answer.

Been trying to just snap pictures of dinner a little more often- last night was chicken piccata (used the @testkitchen recipe which is simple and perfect) with broccoli and pasta for the boys, garlic cauli mash for yours truly. It’s always a clean plate club kind of night.

Raspberry-jalapeño hand pies are LIVE ON MY WEBSITE! Did I mention that I built a website and she’s gorgeous? Still working on some final touches but I’m very proud of her. Every family has a go-to meal. One thats easy and borderline brainless and that the kids will actually eat (I’m looking at you, spaghetti). For us, it’s chicken fingers + salad. Often this takes the form of frozen chicken fingers (@caulipower makes some great ones) and bagged salad, but tonight I stepped it up a bit with the chicken fingers salad from @nocrumbsleft cookbook and Oh Em Gee y’all the 3-year-old ate 4 chicken fingers. And a bunch of cucumbers and peppers and avocado and I can die happy because at least one balanced meal will be eaten this week. (Also: I’ve made my share of almond flour chicken fingers but these are definitely the best I’ve made. We’re really loving Teri’s cookbook- it’s worth checking out!)

Let’s just HYPOTHETICALLY say that bang bang shrimp and California rolls went on a vacation to Costa Rica- would it look like this? Sushi rice, avocado, cucumber, carrots, and surimi crab + nori with mango and topped with bang bang shrimp. Then promptly devoured. Repeat until the heat wave ends. (I followed @iheartumami.ny bang bang shrimp method and it is EXCELLENT. Check it out if you want a light batter that’s crispy and never heavy)

Gonna use one of these bad boys to bribe my children to sit through an at-home haircut today... (s’mores brownies- thin graham cracker crust, @mikebakesnyc fudge brownie, marshmallows, more graham crust, crumbled crackers, choc chips, and more mallows. Over the top in the best way possible)

Headed into the weekend like 🥧🥧🥧...

What’s on the menu this weekend??? I’m hoping to finally make the pork chops in lemon-caper sauce from @tonitiptonmartin ‘s “Jubilee” and probably a batch of raspberry jalapeño jelly for future hand pies. Because we’re gonna need these long after raspberry season ends.
